15:30 When the Guns Fall Silent: An International Perspective on Fostering Reconciliation
Reconciliation is a relatively new concept in the field of conflict resolution. It refers to numerous activities that help turn a peace agreement into a lasting peace by creating trust and understanding among former enemies. South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is considered a model in this field. Since the TRC was created in 1995, at least 20 other such commissions have been created worldwide, albeit not always with the same success. International experts in this session will examined the techniques used to foster reconciliation, in particular the media’s role in this process.

09:30 New Media: New Opportunities, New Threats
As recent events in Burma have shown, new media have become a great source for free speech. Videos, photographs, SMS text messages, e-cards and blogs, as well as notices on the social networking Website Facebook and updates on the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, flooded the world with images and texts about the demonstrations against Burma’s rulers, until the military, recognising the power of the new media, closed off Internet access. While it is perhaps not surprising that authoritarian or totalitarian governments continue to seek control over the Internet, the emergence of new media has also led to new efforts by more liberal governments to regulate the media, in particular with regard to certain content, raising the possibility that long-established rights to freedom of expression and of the press could be threatened anew.

Are Profits Killing the News? (Focus on Europe)
In Europe, as in other parts of the world, newspapers are increasingly under pressure, not only from the Internet, but from private equity companies and other large shareholders, who demand ever expanding profit margins. Critics say these new media owners treat newspapers and other media as an investment in a commodity like any other, ready to dump them when profits sag or investors become nervous. According to some, it is not only the future of newspapers and other media that is at stake here, but also the future of news itself.

11:30 Reporting America
According to a recent Pew Global Attitudes survey, America’s image has plummeted over the last five years throughout much of the world. The fall in U.S. popularity can in part be traced to the policies of the Bush administration, from the war in Iraq to the U.S. detention camp in Guantánamo Bay. But, accepting that the U.S. itself is largely to blame for its poor image, how well does the world’s media perform in reporting on the United States, its actions, policies and motives? Is the reporting fair and unbiased by local and regional political or religious considerations? How well do those who write or broadcast about the U.S. understand it and its political systems, and how well do they convey concepts like representational government, rule of law, balance of powers, freedom of expression and the press to readers and viewers whose societies do not espouse such values? In short, how much does foreign coverage fuel disapproval and suspicion of the United States?
