Vojvodina Patchwork - Hedonism and Serenity
From the window of an airplane, the Vojvodina region of Serbia looks like a beautiful patchwork quilt. An exciting mixture of wildlife refuge and classic vineyards.
This tour takes you to Old Vojvodina grange, a hedonistic and peaceful place with horses, carriages and tamburitza music. It takes you to Sremski Karlovci, a picturesque town that features the baroque ‘four lions’ fountain on the main square and the mid-18th century cathedral with its fine renaissance facade and two baroque belfries. Fruška gora monasteries with their refined architectural styles and beautifully painted frescoes are a testament to the spirituality of the Serbs in the late middle ages. The town of Novi Sad is a perfect combination of urban sophistication and bohemian relaxation, one of the most multi-ethnic cities in Serbia. Above the centre of the city perches the Petrovaradin Fortress – a labyrinth construction of alleys, bulwarks, trenches, gates, underground passages and tunnels to explore.

The view from the Tara National Park reveals beautiful peaks, thick forests and deep caves. The park’s highlight is the massive Drina River Gorge. On the northern slopes of Mount Zlatibor you will find the village of Mokra Gora and ‘The Wooden Town’, a modern equivalent of the medieval village, the creation of world-famous Serbian film director Emir Kusturica, built as a setting for his film ‘Life is a Miracle’.

Lepenski Vir is a 7000-6000 BC prehistoric settlement, well-laid out with unique geometrically perfect housing structures and early artistic forms, including small men and fish-like heads. Not far away is Gamzigrad-Romuliana - the late Roman fortified palace compound and memorial complex of Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius, named after the mother of Emperor Gaius Valerius Galerius Maximianus. The site offers a unique testimony of the Roman building tradition. Viminacium is an antique Roman town and fortress built of stone blocks and ashlars and decorated with columns. The baths of Viminacium are distinguished not only by their luxury but also by their architectural design.
